Join us for Craft and Chat in the Pannett Art Gallery

Come and learn how to knit, crochet or needle felt and enjoy a sociable few hours creating First World War inspired scarves, mittens, ear warmers, balaclavas or embellished jumpers for a First World War themed fashion show as part of “Out of the Darkness”.   The craft session takes place in the Pannett Art Gallery on Saturday 20th October, 10.30am – 3pm, and a selection of First World War patterns and designs will be available.

Thanks to National Lottery players, Whitby Town Council is running this Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) project “Out of the Darkness”, to commemorate the Centenary of the ending of the First World War.

Local young people have been exploring the impact of the First World War on clothing design and they will be showcasing their WW1 inspired garments at a fashion show in the Marquee at Whitby Christmas Festival on Saturday 17th November.

During the First World War there were many people who were unable to join the armed forces but who still wanted to “Do Their Bit” for the war effort. Women, children and men unable to serve in the military contributed in many other ways, including making knitted and crocheted gloves, scarves, balaclavas, cardigans and socks to include in “comfort packages” which were sent to the troops.

Whitby Town Council are hoping people will embrace this idea, whilst enjoying a sociable day of crafting, and help to create First World War themed accessories for the fashion show.

If you love crafting or would like to try knitting, crocheting or needlefelt, please come along and Knit for Whitby.  Even if you don’t want to create items for the fashion show but communal crafting appeals more than solitary knitting or crocheting or you just need a little inspiration then bring along your own knitting/ crochet/ stitching and enjoy the chat.

Join us for communal crafting on Saturday 20th October 10.30am – 3pm

You are welcome to come for the full day, for just an hour, or anything in between.  Or just pop in to see the selection of First World War style patterns and designs available.  We look forward to seeing you there.

If you can’t make the workshop but would like to be involved do get in touch by email: info@whitbytowncouncil.gov.uk or by phone: 01947 820227 and ask for the “Out of the Darkness” project team.
