Pannett Art Gallery is Closed – William Gilbert Foster

Be inspired by this beautiful painting of a woman attending her vegetable patch at Runswick Bay.

The son and pupil of a Birkenhead portrait painter Foster eventually became the Under-Master at Leeds School of Art, teaching among others his fellow Staithes Group artist Owen Bowen.

In 1890 he bought a cottage in Runswick Bay and spent many summers there.

Foster was a founder member of the Staithes Group of Artists and was very supportive of the younger artists, providing advice, encouragement and help in selling their work.

If you have any further information, stories or anecdotes about the artist, or any of the members of the Staithes Art Group, we would love to hear from you. Please contact us by email: Pannett.gallery@whitbytowncouncil.gov.uk
