One Small Step – How to Save the World

We have all experienced the impact of climate change recently, with extreme heat, melting roads, and major wildfires.  These record temperatures are a warning of what could happen to our planet if we don’t start to address the causes of climate change immediately.

There is a lot of information available about the science of climate change, and most people want to take positive action, but not everyone will know where to start, or are overwhelmed by the scale of the issue and feel we can’t do anything to help.

But this isn’t just a problem our government needs to solve, and there are many things we can do to improve the environment and reduce our own CO2 emissions.

There are so many small steps we can take to play our part in protecting nature. From reducing food waste, repairing rather than replacing, turning off lights when not in the room, not overfilling the kettle with more water than you need, many of these actions have the added bonus of actually saving us money.

We all need to support each other on our climate action journey, and to help us with ideas the Pannett Art Gallery is encouraging people to make artworks that illustrate one small step we can take to improve the environment. These could be paintings, collage, embroidery, poetry, photography ….whatever medium you choose.  The exhibition is open to everyone and is free to enter.  The gallery will try to include all the artworks submitted as long as they promote One Small Step to reduce climate change.

Artworks should be A4 or A3 and need to be delivered to the gallery by 7th August.

You can find further details in the NEWS section on the Pannett Art Gallery website

The Pannett Art Gallery want people to make a promise to do something, however small, to help fight climate change.   We would love you to take a photo of your action – such as putting your plastics in the recycling bin, catching the bus, switching off the lights, turning your thermostat down, composting – the range of actions is endless.  Then post the pictures of yourself carrying out your actions on Instagram using the following hashtags   #OneSmallStepWhitby     #pannettartgallery

If you don’t have Instagram then the gallery can post it for you. Email the picture with your name and promise to Helen Berry at pannett.gallery@whitbytowncouncil.gov.uk

(By posting or sending images, you are agreeing to their use on Pannett Art Gallery Social media and they may be used as part of an evaluation of the One Small Step project with funders, Sirius Minerals.)

Let’s see how much of a difference the people of Whitby can make – One Small Step at a time.
