Whitby Bridge by Sarah Ellen Weatherill (1836 – 1918)

Whitby Bridge by Sarah Weatherill

This atmospheric, moonlit scene is signed Sarah Buchanan, the second of George Weatherill and his wife’s, (also called Sarah), four children.

George taught his daughter Sarah to paint and draw and she further developed her talent by studying in London galleries and copying paintings there.

Sarah was the only one of the Weatherill children to marry and to have children.

Sarah signed her early pictures either Sarah Weatherill or with her initials S.E.W.  After marrying Charles Buchannan in 1875 she signed her paintings Sarah Buchannan, but following her marriage Sarah rarely painted.  However, this beautiful watercolour is one of these later paintings.
